Forbidden City/ Weds Aug 23 - special theatre event including a pre-show talk with champagne & post-show meet the cast

We invite you to join the re-staging of the most successful original musical ever to be produced in Singapore — Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress. Originally written for the opening of the Esplanade in 2002, it is again being staged there and produced by the Singapore Repertory Theatre.

Our evening will start with a talk about the Empress's background and the history of China at that period of history; in particular how she manoeuvred herself into a position of power in an almost bloodless coup, her difficult role during years of upheaval inc the Boxer rebellion, and the good relationship she had with the ladies of the diplomatic corps.

Our speaker, Callum Ross McCulloch, has lived and worked as a structural engineer in Singapore since 1987. His interest in turn of the century pre-revolutionary Chinese history began when he was one of the principal designers of the original incarnation of Singapore’s Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall. Since then, Callum has been an enthusiastic amateur historian, gathering information and collecting books from around the period. He is fascinated by the enigmatic Empress Dowager CiXi who ruled during a time of immense upheaval, as the ‘modern’ world increasingly imposed itself on a China that was divided between embracing new ways and preserving established interests.

This talk will be accompanied by a glass of champagne. We will then watch the show in excellent seats, after which we will have the opportunity to meet the cast.

Please note the $148 ticket price includes the glass of champagne plus the SISTIC fee.
